Adam John Newell (c1856-1913) Obituary

An interesting personality gets a kindly send-off: — Many residents of the Harvey will regret the death of Adam John Newell (Old Jack, as he was familiarly called). He was one of the pioneers of the orange-growing industry in that district, and in conjunction with Messrs. Teesdale Smith and Christenson once owned that now valuable orchard situated on the bank of the Harvey River, which catches the eyes of train passengers to and from Perth.

Jack, besides being an expert orchardist, was a sterling good fellow. Many a traveller has received hospitality at his hands, and no one ever appealed to him in vain. His house was open to all, and nothing pleased him better than to have some of his old friends around, and over a glass of good old Scotch recount his many and extraordinary adventures by flood and field. Perhaps Jack was as well known by his yarns as from his fame as an orchardist, and the visitors to Harvey looked forward to a night at Alec Smith’s, and in company with Jack and his friends spent the evening listening to his experiences in different parts of the State.

Newell was a Canadian by birth, but came to Australia in his early manhood. He was associated with Messrs. Chaffey Bros. at Mildura, and at one time was a member of the Adelaide Stock Exchange; he was also a commercial traveller representing the old Adelaide firm of Wood, Toms and Co. He passed out at the age of 57 per medium of that dread disease cancer. After a strenuous life well spent he has earned his rest.
