Australind Cemetery Entrance
The top of a hill called ‘Mount Claremont’ was selected for the Australind Cemetery in 1841 when the town was planned. As one writer commented, ‘the planners, with singular lack of consideration for grave diggers, selected the crest of a limestone hill … many of the pioneers rest there in graves that are more like vaults hewn out of stone.’[1] This may account for the scattered locations of the graves.
The cemetery was not consecrated until 1852 when Bishop Short made a visit from South Australia, the Colony of Western Australia was then still part of the Adelaide diocese.
The Graves
Not all of the people buried in this cemetery died at Australind. The tragedy of a small family is hidden in Grave 15: the husband, the young wife and their infant son all died in Perth between July and September 1852. They were brought to Australind for burial where Rachel Smith née Clifton, who was only 19 when she died, had grown up.
Some of the early graves had wooden railings, as well as headstones. Bushfires and white ants have destroyed many of these. Trees and bushes have grown over some graves, and vandals have removed some numbers. All these factors, as well as time and weather, have made some graves difficult to identify.
Not all those in this list are buried at Australind, but their names appear on headstones or are otherwise recorded. In many cases, records indicate cremations and this has been noted when known.
Ghainda (Grave 65) was described as a ‘Hindoo’, and he was probably from India. As he was not a Christian, he was not buried in the consecrated section of the cemetery.

The plan of grave locations (see below) will help you find each grave by number. The main list is arranged alphabetically by family name and contains grave number, date of death, age at death and some records also include further information known at the time.
